Electronic Signature

This is the most basic electronic signature; it’s usually the digital representation of your graphical signature which is associated with other digital data (i.e. file, document). You can draw one using a mouse, touch interface or by adding a scanned signature to the document. While the simple electronic signature is widely used to sign basic agreements and forms, it’s hard to legally verify that you were the one who signed the document.

Electronic signatures are used for:

Advanced Electronic Signature (AdES)

An advanced electronic signature uses public key infrastructure (PKI) with certificates and cryptographic keys to secure signatures. The AdES must also be:

• Capable of identifying the signatory
• Created using electronic signature creation device that the signatory can, with a high level of confidence, use under his sole control
• Linked to the data signed therewith in such a way that any subsequent change in the data is detectable

Advanced electronic signatures are used for:

• Custom quotations for clients
• Vendor invoices 
• Paramedics reports
• Universities graduation forms
• Internal documents that require multiple approvers

Qualified Electronic Signature (QES)

Going above and beyond the AdES, a qualified electronic signature is an advanced electronic signature that is:

• Created by a qualified electronic signature creation device
• Based on a qualified certificate for electronic signatures
• Created by a qualified trust service provider

Qualified electronic signatures are used for:

• Government contracts and statements
• Personal medical files and forms 
• Defense industry documents 
• Telecommunications contracts and agreements
• Banking documents 
• Enterprise companies outgoing invoices

Once issued, where do I store my electronic certificate? 

You have three different options for storage depending on the requirements of your company or your own personal needs:

• A smart  PKI token 

A USB PKI Token stores your secure electronic signature cryptographic keys and certificate and is ideal for individuals. It is FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certified token. You can use it to electronically sign documents from a computer with dedicated signing software (CTD). 

• A Smart Card with a secured PIN

A smart card (credit card-like secured portable device) stores one electronic signature. Like the hardware token it is FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certified token, it’s ideal for individuals signing documents from one workstation that has signing software installed. 

• Signer1 – Advanced remote signing server, eIDAS compliant

• An advanced signing server e-IDAS approved includes an eIDAS approved A HSM It provides security for thousands of electronic signatures, positioning it as an ideal solution for large organizations and enterprise companies.

How do I sign documents using my electronic signature?

You can either sign using desktop software like ComSignTrust Desktop (CTD) or with a signing server like Comsign’s Signer-1.
